AMURTEL

The Ananda Marga AMURTEL section is the women’s wing of AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team), which is itself a humanitarian branch of the Ananda Marga organization. AMURTEL was founded in 1975 and is managed entirely by women, focusing specifically on the needs of women and children affected by disasters and poverty worldwide.
What AMURTEL Is About
• AMURTEL is an international women’s NGO that initiates and manages projects by women for women and children, particularly in crisis situations such as natural disasters, refugee crises, and poverty.
• It provides relief and development services including medical care for pregnant and nursing mothers, education on infant care and nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, and protection against gender-based violence.
• AMURTEL also supports economic self-sufficiency for women by offering skill training in areas like sewing, handicrafts, cooking, and small-scale industries.
• It establishes safe women’s spaces, day centers, and works within refugee camps and shelters to support vulnerable women, including pregnant and postpartum mothers.
Aim of AMURTEL
• To mitigate the effects of crises on women and children by empowering women to be the best possible mothers and caregivers, thus giving children a healthy start in life.
• To empower women through education and community-building, helping them overcome isolation and trauma caused by disasters and displacement.
• To promote women’s economic independence and improve health and education standards for women and their families.
• To provide disaster relief and long-term rehabilitation with a focus on the specific vulnerabilities of women and children.
Relationship with AMURT and Ananda Marga
• AMURTEL is the sister organization of AMURT, which was founded in 1970 to provide disaster relief and community development worldwide, especially to those suffering from poverty and calamities.
• Both AMURT and AMURTEL operate under the broader Ananda Marga philosophy of self-realization and service to humanity, combining spiritual practice with social service.
• AMURTEL complements AMURT’s work by addressing the gender-specific needs in disaster relief and development, ensuring women and children receive targeted support.
